Mount Thorley Warkworth
Mount Thorley Warkworth (MTW) is an integrated operation of two open cut mines located adjacent to each other, 15 kilometres south-west of Singleton in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales.
Both the Mount Thorley and Warkworth mines have been in operation since 1981. Yancoal Australia acquired MTW on 1 September 2017 and manages the mine on behalf of the joint venture partners:
- Mount Thorley: Yancoal Australia (80%) and POSCO Australia (20%).
- Warkworth: Yancoal Australia (84.5%), Nippon Steel Australia (9.5% per cent) and Mitsubishi Materials (Australia) (6%).
Mining and production
MTW an open cut mine, using a dragline truck and shovel method. Employees work in shifts to keep the mine operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. After being washed and prepared for sale, the coal is loaded onto trains for transportation 90 kilometres to the Port Waratah Coal Terminal in Newcastle where it is shipped to international customers.
Community
MTW seeks to be more than just a major source of local employment and economic growth, and to partner with the local community. MTW’s Community Consultative Committee (CCC) meets regularly to provide a forum for open discussion between the community, the local council and Yancoal representatives. The committee discusses issues directly relating to the mining operation and environmental performance, keeping the community informed on these matters and potential impacts.
Yancoal operates a site-level Community Support Program (CSP), which is designed to invest in projects, programs and initiatives capable of making a difference to the lives of people in our local communities. Each year, Yancoal allocates funds at a site level to support community groups and programs operating across the areas of health; social and community; environment; education and training; and culture and the arts.
